Thousands in Istanbul Pray for Ex-Egyptian President Morsi

He had requested to speak during the session before he fainted and died.

Erdogan, a key supporter of Morsi, joined the afternoon prayers at the historic Fatih mosque, an AFP photographer reported.

On Tuesday, funeral prayers for Morsi were held in mosques across Turkey, including near the Egyptian Embassy in the capital Ankara. "Whether this was a normal walk, or were there some other conditions involved, this is something to think about". She said in a tweet Monday that Morsi's death was "terrible but entirely predictable".

Some observers criticized Morsi's burial for its unseemly haste, which did not allow enough time for all of his family members to gather, and the refusal to allow him to be interred in his hometown in accordance with Egyptian burial traditions.

The United Nations human rights office called on Tuesday for an independent investigation into the death of Egypt's former President Mohamed Mursi, saying it should encompass all aspects of his treatment during almost six years in custody. He also appears to have been held in prolonged solitary confinement.

He was buried on Tuesday, as rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch called for an independent probe into the causes of his death.

Mursi's death is likely to increase global pressure on the Egyptian government over its human rights record, especially conditions in prisons. The Egyptian authorities must immediately order an impartial, thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death, as well as his detention conditions and his ability to access medical care.

The ex-president's death after six years in jail under the military-backed establishment that ousted him in 2013 stoked anger among his supporters in Egypt and overseas.

He spent just one turbulent year in office after the 2011 uprising, before being toppled by the military after millions took to the streets demanding his resignation. Erdogan labeled Egypt's current President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi a "murderer" who had overseen the executions of many people, prompting a fresh volley of Islamist slogans.

Sisi became president in June 2014 and unlike his deposed predecessor has been met with much stronger backing from Egypt's western allies, than was ever afforded to Egypt's first democratically elected leader. Egypt has cracked down on Islamist groups since Mursi's ousting.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran, while respecting the views of the great and courageous nation of Egypt, offers its sympathies over the death of Dr. Mohamed Morsi to the Egyptian people, his family and his loved ones", a statement from the foreign ministry's spokesman said.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran, while respecting the views of the great and fearless nation of Egypt, offers its sympathies over the death of Dr. Mohamed Morsi to the Egyptian people, his family and his loved ones, and asks God to bestow His mercy and blessings on him", the spokesman said.

Iran is an ally of Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules the Gaza Strip.

The Muslim Brotherhood has described Morsi's death as a "full-fledged murder" and called for mass gatherings to mark his passing.

For most of my Egyptian friends, Morsi and the brief flirtation with the Brotherhood in government is something of an embarrassment.

Egypt's former president, Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood leader who rose to office in the country's first free elections in 2012 and was ousted a year later by the military, has collapsed in court during an espionagetrial and died, according to state TV and his family.

A British parliamentary panel said a year ago that Morsi had received inadequate medical treatment for diabetes and liver illness and was being kept in solitary confinement, which could put his life in danger. Egypt's government has dismissed accusations that he was badly treated. The group's Middle East director, Sarah Leah Whitson, said on Twitter Monday that Morsi's imprisonment was "cruel and inhumane" and said he was "deprived of family visits and medical care". Then, Morsi saw victory in presidential elections held in 2012. A witness told ABC News there was a heavy security presence in a major thoroughfare leading to the cemetery.
