U.S. beat France to book England semi-final

Monday, 01 Jul, 2019

The French roster featured seven players from Olympique Lyonnais, the most dominant team in European club soccer, where Canadian Kadeisha Buchanan plays.

"I have so much support around me, from the media team helping me to just the group and my family and friends and everybody". We hit them where it hurt. We were ruthless in our chances.

Megan Rapinoe continued to dominate Twitter conversations well into the weekend.

Trump tweeted (at the wrong Megan Rapinoe) that she "should WIN first before she TALKS", which might be part of the reason why she was striding around like a gladiator following her second goal today.

Even before referee Kateryna Monzul had blown her whistle to start the match, U.S. captain Morgan had raised eyebrows by not singing the national anthem.

The USA then soaked up pressure before delivering the knockout blow midway through the second half when Rapinoe turned in Tobin Heath's centre, although Wendie Renard pulled a goal back for France to set up a tense finish. The French captain won all her battles and completed a string of successful, crucial passes, as she ended her tournament on a big high in a very good performance in Paris. This is probably her last World Cup tournament but she will expect another World Cup trophy.

"It did live up to expectations, I'm happy to say that", USA star Alex Morgan said.

The U.S. team is used to grabbing attention both on and off the field.

Rapinoe was caught up in a controversy this week when a video surfaced of her using an expletive while vowing not to visit the White House.

The USWNT's star striker had sung the "Star-Spangled Banner" with gusto, and had also placed her hand on her heart, in the US' first four matches of this tournament.

She said: "No and, to be frank, I wasn't aware until the press officer told me".

Sixty-five minutes into the game, Rapinoe scored the second US goal with a perfectly timed shot into the back of the post. "She's a big-time player and the bigger the stage the more she's going to respond and I think she was fantastic tonight".

Another of her causes is rallying against the United States justice system for locking up drug addicts too readily, as her brother Brian has been in and out of custody as he battles addiction.

Rapinoe has been in the news recently, not only for her sporting achievements but also for the animosity between her and Donald Trump.

U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was finally tested when Valerie Gauvin's header threatened to loop over her head but she dived backwards to claim it.

Forward Eugenie Le Sommer, a key player on Lyon's dominant team, gave a clear indication of where France is still lacking.

She will be a major factor in Friday's quarterfinals match versus the United States (3 p.m. EST, Fox).

Head coach Phil Neville says it would be considered a "failure" if England do not beat the United States of America to reach the Women's World Cup final.

On a day where France had experienced record-breaking temperatures, the heat did not affect the opening stages of a match which had started at a frantic pace.

"Megan is a baller", said US defender Kelley O'Hara. That's what we want to pride ourselves on, the hard work, the ability to be one of the fittest teams in the world and to be really humble in everything that we do, so for someone of that calibre and so much status to say that about me and my team-mates is unbelievable and I'd like to thank her for that.

"Seven out of the eight teams in the quarter-finals were from Europe and qualifying for the Olympics was one of the targets I had for this year".

They've not been beaten at a World Cup since 2011 and seldom regarded be pleased losing in Paris, where they own been on top no matter getting 10 fewer photos than France.

Despite the disappointment, head coach Corinne Diacre believes her side has captured the imagination of the French public.

He recounted the time her studs went through his watch and joked that she still hasn't paid him back.
