Hurricane Dorian: ‘Extremely dangerous’ Category 4 storm heads towards Florida

Воскресенье, 01 Сен, 2019

Hurricane Dorian strengthened yet again this morning, the powerful storm now packing winds of 145 miles per hour.

Forecasters said the storm's slow pace means the East Coast could be pummeled for days with heavy wind and torrential rain.

Life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds are still possible for Florida's east coast, the National Hurricane Center reports while noting the storm is expected to slow down and turn northward near or just offshore of the East Coast in the middle part of next week.

If Dorian comes ashore as a Category 3 or 4 storm and strikes Florida, it would be the most powerful hurricane to hit the state's east coast since Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida 27 years ago.

As the storm threatened to intensify to a Category 5, experts predicted that it could weaken slightly before hitting the Bahamas, while remaining a highly risky Category 4.

In the Bahamas, any remaining tourists were sent to government shelters in schools, churches and other buildings offering protection from the storm.

Hurricane Dorian is an "extremely dangerous" category four storm and the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has warned of winds and storm surges.

Although Campbell has since deleted her original tweet, she later defended her words, connecting her animus for Trump and desire that Mar-a-Lago is destroyed to the president's environmental policy, which does not prioritize the climate change agenda.

Dorian was expected to hit the northwestern part of the Bahamas by Sunday with the potential for life-threatening storm surge that could raise water levels 15 feet (5 meters) above normal.

Two high pressure systems could pin Dorian between them as it nears the coast or gets on shore and that could create a situation similar to what happened when Hurricane Harvey stalled over Texas bringing record rainfall, said Rouiller.

Colonial Pipeline, which delivers fuels such as petrol and diesel from the Gulf Coast to markets across the southern and eastern USA, said it was operating normally. Concern centered on projections that the storm would pass with excruciating slowness, subjecting the beach resorts, marinas and mangrove flats on the northern islands to a prolonged threat from high winds and serious flooding.
