Forecasters said the storm's slow pace means the East Coast could be pummeled for days with heavy wind and torrential rain.
Life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds are still possible for Florida's east coast, the National Hurricane Center reports while noting the storm is expected to slow down and turn northward near or just offshore of the East Coast in the middle part of next week.
If Dorian comes ashore as a Category 3 or 4 storm and strikes Florida, it would be the most powerful hurricane to hit the state's east coast since Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida 27 years ago.

As the storm threatened to intensify to a Category 5, experts predicted that it could weaken slightly before hitting the Bahamas, while remaining a highly risky Category 4.
