The Category Five storm hit the island on Sunday drenching houses and leaving some under several feet of water up to 24 hours later.
At 5 p.m. EDT, Dorian was centered about 45 miles (75 kilometers) southeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, moving at 10 mph (17 kph).
With a now-distant Dorian pushing its way up the Southeastern U.S. coast, menacing Georgia and the Carolinas, many people living in the Bahamas were in shock as they slowly came out of shelters and checked on their homes, according to The Associated Press.
Large waves crashed onto the beach of Tybee Island, Ga., Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019 as Hurricane Dorian moved closer to the Georgia coast.
Risky winds and life-threatening storm surge are expected along the coasts of Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and southeast Virginia, including the southern part of Chesapeake Bay.
As conditions began to deteriorate in Charleston early Thursday, emergency management officials requested that citizens shelter in place, the Charleston Police Department said on Twitter. "But we've got another storm surge coming later on, so we'll see then if it holds". The bulk of those were in SC, where 154,000 customers were in the dark.
At 11 a.m. Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center extended the area under warning to stretch from north of the Savannah River to the North Carolina-Virginia border, as well as Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. Three people died in Orange County, Florida, during storm preparations or evacuation, according to the Orange County mayor's office. More than a quarter-million people have evacuated as Dorian nears. "This is not a storm to mess with".
Georgia State will give free tickets to their first home game of the season against Furman on Saturday. Many buildings had walls or roofs partly ripped off. "The Bahamas has certainly never seen anything on the scale", he said, adding that the most comparable recent disaster was the near total destruction of the Caribbean island of Dominica, by Hurricane Maria, in 2017.
He thanked the global community for its response and assistance.
Hurricane-force winds extend up to 60 miles from its center, while tropical-storm-force winds can be felt up to 175 miles from the core.
Flooding is possible in low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage in the western Triangle, NWS forecasters reported.
The hurricane remained over the north-west Bahamas for one and a half days, before weakening and moving away towards the coast of Florida.
While speaking alongside FEMA officials Wednesday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp warned about unsafe storm surges and high tides, which are expected as the storm reaches the state's coast.
As Dorian spins along the southeastern USA coast, another storm is churning in the Atlantic. The storm will still be a powerful hurricane over the next few days.
