Predictions for Buckeyes vs. Spartans

Sunday, 06 Oct, 2019

What unfolded in the first quarter, where Ohio State settled for a 3-0 lead despite forcing turnovers on the first two Spartan possessions, seemed inevitable.

For the first time, this season Fields looked like a first-year starting quarterback as the Buckeyes put up just 16 yards in the first quarter. That's the second-highest rushing total allowed during Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio's 13 seasons lead the program, trailing only the 335 Ohio State racked up in a 48-3 blowout against the Spartans in 2017.

Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) is averaging 52 points a game.

"We're not focused too much on last year or two years ago, whatever", Michigan State's senior quarterback Brian Lewerke said.

"There were some mistakes made", Day said.

The Buckeyes would gain only 16 total yards and two first downs in the first quarter.

The Buckeyes were first to score in Saturday night's game when Blake Haubeil kicked a 39 yard field goal in the first quarter. Victor beat Kalon Gervin down the sideline before leaping over Josiah Scott into the end zone. Three plays later, Dobbins hit a hole on the right side, split a couple of Spartans defenders and raced upfield. He has 15 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns.

Ohio State could not get anything going in its first four drives against Michigan State.

Mike Weber found a seam right down the middle of the field and bolted 47 yards, into the end zone for an untouched touchdown. Dobbins busted through the middle for a 67-yard touchdown and 24-10 lead. "There was still a gap between us and Ohio State at that time and we've battled them very well under Coach (Dantonio) and that's what we're going to do this week". I think the Spartans thrive on being the underdog and will be up for this game and giving Ohio State a real game.

The second quarter has been kind to the Buckeyes the entire year.

Through the first of the season, the Buckeyes have scored 39 offensive touchdowns. He demonstrated his ability to stay cool, Dobbins ran tough and the Ohio State defense bent but didn't break. The Buckeyes ended up with seven plays of 20-plus yards. The Spartans weren't built to play catch-up. Next week brings another monster road game against No. 8 Wisconsin.

Ohio State owns the second quarter.

But he also threw his first career interception as a college football player. In 2015, a win at Ohio State vaulted the Spartans to another conference title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. They were a top defense against the run past year and nine of those starters are back.
