Deadly Attack Leaves California Hmong Community In Shock

Police in the central California city of Fresno were searching Monday for suspects and trying to determine a motive for the killing of four people at a backyard party and the wounding of six as dozens were watching football on TV.

But Chief Hall did say that authorities believe there were, in fact, two shooters - at least two - judging from the shell casings that were found at the scene and that those individuals either fled on foot or, perhaps, in a vehicle.

The shooting occurred in a quiet, working-class Hispanic and South Asian neighborhood and though they haven't seen a spike in Asian gang-related crime they are beginning to see violence in the lead up to the Hmong new year, he said.

Fresno has a large community of people of the Hmong ethnic group from Southeast Asia.

There are about 300,000 Hmong living in the U.S., in accordance to the 2017 American Community Study by the U.S. Census. Some of his videos show him performing in a home studio where he sang and played a keyboard, including one from just one month ago.

Lee was a musician who was famous in the Hmong community.

"It makes me feel unsafe to be outside when the sun's down", he said.

The Hmong community in Fresno has flourished, Arias said, with children growing up to be doctors, lawyers, teachers and elected leaders. They come out and perform to our mental health clients every year. These are people that are near and dear to us. He worked with the elders, who serve as the community's spiritual and cultural leaders and who fought in the Vietnam War.

"We have received confirmation from his family member that Xy Lee, the famous Hmong singer, was indeed one of the victims that was shot and killed at the family gathering", states a post on the Hmong Talk Facebook page. California has the nation's greatest Hmong populace and about 25,000 reside in Fresno, comprising about 5% of the city's inhabitants of 525,000.

The shooting was not random, however, the chief said. Hall said there had been an "uptick" of violence in Southeast Fresno, with 11 incidents this year involving Asian gangs.

"There is no indication that the residents, or anyone at the residence, were affiliated with a gang", said Hall. But we would like to invite readers who can afford to do so, and for whom The Times of Israel has become important, to help support our journalism by joining The Times of Israel Community. Obviously they're extremely upset.

Hall did mention a "disturbance" in the previous week that investigators were looking into.

Yang said he was "very disturbed".

The Fresno police chief said, "This is truly a good group of people who were simply having a party". "This is the third shooting I've heard since the middle of September".
