Boras: 2 new 'mystery teams' in pursuit of Cole

Thursday, 12 Dec, 2019

The deal surpasses the $245 million contract pitcher Stephen Strasburg received from the Washington Nationals on Monday. "We are interested in pursuing some opportunities - opportunities to get better immediately and opportunities to make our future healthier as well - but you can't force anything". For reasons of familiarity and comfort, Cole was rumored to lean toward signing with a team from the West Coast, though Cole himself never said so publicly. Cole is a special player and he is exactly what the Yankees needed.

In the regular season, he was 18-6 with a 3.32 ERA.

The Angels made no secret of their desire to land Cole.

Of course much can happen over the course of the Winter Meetings, and there will undoubtedly be new information coming out as we go along. The San Diego Padres, who committed $144 million to first baseman Eric Hosmer prior to the 2018 season, then $300 million to third baseman Manny Machado before the 2019 season, and finished last in the NL West both seasons, also were believed to have interest in Strasburg, along with Cole.

Here's the latest on bidding for the three-time All-Star.

Cole was open to a homecoming. "It's a really unique park". The question now becomes if the Dodgers are bold enough to make all three moves as being bold hasn't been the Dodger way in quite some time.

The Yankees do not face an uphill battle to the postseason. But one thing is for sure, and that's Cole will be one very rich man by the end of 2019.

Geography, it turned out, did not tilt Cole toward the Angels. He also attended UCLA, 17 miles from Dodger Stadium. He struck out a career-high 251 batters in 33 starts and led the National League with 209 innings pitched. That meeting apparently went a long way in persuading Cole to come to the franchise he rooted for growing up.

"He's got elite, elite stuff", Boone said of Cole, "elite pitch characteristics".

The Dodgers have been cautious in their pursuit of free agents in years past, foregoing the opportunity to sign top players like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado to the long-term contracts that they eventually signed with other clubs.

Cole has always been considered the brightest star of the 2019 free-agent class, with a number of teams vying for his signature and he could be receiving offers as soon as the MLB Winter Meetings begin this week. Starting pitchers still available include World Series veteran Madison Bumgarner, and Cole's fellow Scott Boras clients, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dallas Keuchel. It's more than likely that Rendon would be more of a backup option. "We're having multiple conversations on that front".

Washington still has other holes to fill this offseason - primarily third base, first base, and in the bullpen. Lately, there's a lot of owls, where they're kind of wise and mostly work at night in what they do, very thoughtful. "I do think we can benefit from some change in certain areas". The vibe I'm getting, is that Austin Romine will not be returning to the Yankees.
