Canadians quarantined on cruise ship in Japan

The epidemic had originated in Hubei province of China, and has killed hundreds of people, with more than 10,000 infected so far. He boarded the Diamond Princess in Yokohama on January 20 and disembarked in Hong Kong on January 25, the company said.

None of those who tested positive are Canadian.

The health checks began on Monday evening after an 80-year-old Hong Kong man who sailed on the vessel last month tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus.

The elderly and those with pre-existing conditions will be tested for the virus as they tend to be worst affected if infected, the ministry said.

Later on Wednesday, health workers in the port city of Yokohama, said 10 more people were confirmed sickened with the virus and they will be transferred to nearby hospitals for further testing and treatment.

The Japanese government spokesman, Yoshihide Suga, said on Monday that the Japanese authorities would quarantine the ship, which arrived in Yokohama Bay a day earlier than originally planned.

The cruise authorities reportedly said in a statement that the man did not visit a medical centre inside the ship while he was sailing. The vessel was quarantined February 5 for a minimum two-week period.

"Passengers with inside cabins are now allowed to walk on the deck for 1.5 hours under the supervision of the Quarantine officers", Abel said in his latest post.

By nationality, the ten infected include three Japanese, three Chinese, two Australians, one American and one Filipino, according to Carnival Japan Inc., the operator of the Diamond Princess cruise ship. Passengers on board were kept at the Port of Civitavecchia, north of Rome.

The Ministry of Health of Japan is transferring patients with confirmed infection of the new coronavirus to diagnostic hospitals in Japan and carrying out anti-epidemic measures on board.

Carnival Japan was not immediately available to comment.

One of the guests on board is David Abel, who has been sharing his experience on the ship since the quarantine.

The U.S. has also declared a public health emergencyover the new virus.There are 11 confirmed novel coronavirus cases in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
