Trump remains a threat to American democracy, says US House Speaker

Meanwhile, Republicans say Democrats have been trying to impeach Trump since he took office and rushed through impeachment in an attempt to remove the president from ballot in the 2020 presidential election. The unfriendly exchange happened when Pelosi extended her hand to shake Trump's after he handed her a copy of his speech.

Later quizzed by a reporter as she left the halls of Capitol, she said: "Because it was the courteous thing to do, considering the alternative".

The Democratic-led House of Representatives impeached Trump in December for his alleged corruption in only the third such hearing against a president in the country's history. Now, she's leading House Democrats out of impeachment's shadow, through regular legislative business and toward Election Day in November.

Some Democrats who attended the speech quickly rallied to Pelosi's defense, calling out the president for what they viewed as a combative address.

And that's saying something, considering her unapologetic style when it comes to him.

"That was not a State of the Union", Pelosi said. In private, she questioned the president's manhood. She also suggested the president should offer Presidential Medals of Freedom in the Oval Office, not where Congress works.

Two days after his closer-to-conventional State of the Union address, President Trump just delivered a. different sort of speech.

Wait, why was Nancy Pelosi ripping paper?

Romney said it was the "most hard decision I have ever faced" and he expected he would come in for harsh criticism from fellow Republicans.

"I feel very liberated".

Following the vote, President Donald Trump is expected to address the nation to discuss his acquittal.

"He shredded the truth, so I shredded his speech", said Pelosi during the meeting, according to Politico, citing multiple unnamed sources.

Sixty-seven votes are required to convict on each of the two articles of impeachment, and while several Republicans have said they believe Trump acted inappropriately in his dealings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, as of Thursday morning, none have said they believe his conduct was impeachable.

For Pelosi and the Democrats, the address was a much more glum event.

It was the end of a hard week for Democrats in Congress and across the nation, beginning with the botched Iowa caucuses on Monday.

It was just another moment of tension between Pelosi and Trump in a night full of them. Trump turned away without shaking it. The Speaker shouldn't have ripped up his speech. "She must be held accountable", Gaetz tweeted.

A photograph of Pelosi smirking and exaggeratedly applauding Trump during his 2019 State of the Union address went viral at the time.

Also, Trump who appeared not to have noticed Pelosi's action joined the lawmakers and those present to clap as he stepped down from the podium where he gave the speech.

He first announced the complaint on FOX News Wednesday night.

The White House criticised Pelosi's actions on Twitter.

A conviction on either count would have elevated Vice President Mike Pence into the presidency.
