All athletic and extracurricular events and practices are also canceled for the week of March 16-20, as well. "However, I have heard from superintendents, school board members, teachers, parents, and students that it has now become impossible to functionally operate schools due to workforce issues and student absences".
The risk to the general public remains low.
California officials are calling for the cancellation of all gatherings with 250 or more people to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Refunds for those already holding tickets will be offered next week. Information about locations will be sent out by Tuesday.

Angela Harris, a mother of El Morro Elementary and Thurston Middle School students, said she's pleased with district leaders' decision to close schools. Public schools will now be closed until March 30 at the earliest.
Butler Area School District administrators are not viewing the next two weeks as a school closure.
Warren City Schools Superintendent Steve Chiaro said the district will not be sending paper lessons home with students, but it will be developing online lessons. Michigan, Ohio and New Mexico are closing their schools for at least three weeks; Maryland and OR officials closed schools for two weeks.
Several states, including Ohio, Michigan, Maryland, New Mexico and OR, announced Thursday that schools in those states would be closed statewide. This is not an easy decision and not one we take lightly. Schools will be closed starting on Monday and they will be closed for three weeks. Both schools will be open 9 a.m.to 2 p.m. today to give parents the opportunity to pick up textbooks.
