EXPLAINER: Who is affected by Trump’s suspension of foreign work visas?

The move has proved unpopular with tech companies, who have long used the work visas to hire overseas talent.

"For the most part, the president withstood intense pressure from powerful business interests that continue to demand more cheap foreign labor, even as they have laid off an unprecedented number of American workers over the past three months " Stein said.

H1 B visa is for skilled work such as engineering, IT and science while H2B is issued for hospitality and construction workforce.

That is the median income or the middle of the range and is now $63,000, according to the Census Bureau. "This presidential proclamation ignores this reality and will make emerging from this crisis more hard and expensive", AILA President Jennifer Minear said.

US President Donald Trump on Monday suspended the temporary work visas, including H-1B, for foreigners till the end of the year.

BSA - also known as the Software Alliance - points out having access to foreign talents supports 14.4 million jobs and contributes $1.6 trillion in the total value-added GDP of the U.S. every year.

According to Trump, over 17 million United States jobs were lost between February and April of 2020 in industries in which employers are interested in hiring workers tied to H-2B nonimmigrant visas. Justifying his move, the U.S. president said that the suspension of these visas will help millions of Americans who have lost their jobs due to coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.

That would be Trump's latest step to restrict immigration.

Business sectors who depend on foreign workers have strongly opposed constraints for the new order, while the US Chamber of Commerce, the nation's largest business association said the new policy will sultry the economy.

The White House, in a statement, said, "President Trump is building on this measure with an additional pause on several job-related non-immigrant visas-H-1Bs, H-2Bs without a nexus to the food-supply chain, certain H-4s, as well as Ls and certain Js-preserving jobs for American citizens".

"The immigration restrictionists would like us all to believe that every single company bringing over foreign-born workers is nefarious and just wants to bring in people who are underpaid", said Rand.

H-2B visas, which were included in the suspension, have been used by Trump owned- or Trump-branded businesses, including his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

Gonzalez, the attorney, gave an example of how this could impact South Florida: "There is a large multinational, publicly traded company that just completed an acquisition of a US company earlier this year that was seeking to transfer its executive team to the USA on L-1 visas".

While this probably won't affect workers now in the country on theses types of visas, this is still spiteful and awful. They are valid for the duration of the H-1B visa. Leon Fresco, a former Obama administration official who now represents H-1B workers, told NPR that it was "counterproductive" and akin to "using a nuclear bomb to tackle a fight in a bar".
