Ramos penalty sends Real Madrid four clear

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane caused a surprise on Wednesday when he left winger Eden Hazard out of his squad to face Getafe in the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium on Thursday night.

"If I had wanted personal recognition then I'd have played tennis".

Madrid now has 74 points while Barcelona has 70 points after 33 matches.

"I don't think he is afraid [of injuries]; what that he wants is to be good enough to play". We had to take advantage of Barcelona's slip, today was a final.

"We had to win yes but nothing more". "People have to look at themselves and be critical of their own performances".

"We're doing well in that sense".

Hazard's first season at Madrid since his €100 million move from Chelsea has been blighted by injuries, with the 29-year-old having only started 13 league games in 2019-20. Eder Militao stepped in superbly on that occasion and often battled Williams alone.

Athletic, however, were denied a spot-kick late on when Ramos appeared to tread on their forward Raul Garcia.

The second half continued in similar fashion to the first, although chances were hard to come by this time around.

Karim Benzema would have had a tap-in had Dani Carvajal executed a cushioned pass across the box but his touch was too high.

Incredibly, the Real Madrid skipper's goal was his fifth in just seven games since the La Liga restart, as his team hit championship form at the ideal time.

Sergio Ramos struck the only goal of the game with a penalty awarded after a VAR review showed Marcelo had been fouled by Dani Garcia.

Bilbao looked exhausted and never really threatened an equaliser but could have been gifted one had Ramos been penalised for the clumsy collision with Raul Garcia.

Simon saved smartly with his legs from Benzema in the closing stages, but the one Ramos goal proved enough for Madrid again.
