The idea of wearing a mask in public places, which some states require and the CDC strongly recommends, has become a politically polarizing debate in the US despite experts saying it significantly reduces the risk of spreading the virus. Some of his close aides reveal on condition of anonymity that the president fears to wear a face mask because he doesn't want to appear like a weak and frightened leader.

Trump was wearing a mask in Walter Reed's hallway as he began his visit.
