Trump cancels Republican convention in Florida after coronavirus spike

Their gathering will consist largely of virtual events, with a small number of people appearing in person in their host city of Milwaukee, Wis.

The president's reversal in resuming the briefings served as a tacit acknowledgment that his move-on strategy had failed in the court of public opinion - the decision coming on the heels of a new ABC/Washington Post poll showed six in 10 Americans disapprove of his handling of the pandemic.

"To have a big convention, it's not the right time", Trump told reporters at the White House.

Although Trump plans to deliver a speech accepting the nomination, a Republican official familiar with convention planning said there would be no events in Jacksonville.

"Reopening schools creates opportunity to invest in the education, well-being, and future of one of America's greatest assets - our children", the CDC said. "Our best estimate right now is that for every case that was reported, there actually were 10 other infections", Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said last month.

Trump also reiterated that he wanted schools to open in the fall.

Some Republican delegates will still gather in Charlotte, North Carolina, the original venue for the convention.

Trump had already had to move part of the convention from North Carolina to Florida because of restrictions on gathering due to the virus.

The Republican convention had been scheduled to be held in Jacksonville from August 24-27.

The United States has surpassed 4 million confirmed coronavirus cases, reflecting a recent surge in infections and signalling that the country is far from containing the outbreak.

Deaths have topped 1,000 twice this week across the United States, which hasn't been seen since May.

"The President has built the most innovative political campaign in history and will provide exciting, informative, and enthusiastic programming so Republicans can celebrate the re-nomination of President Trump and Vice President Pence", he said.

NY now has 408,181 total infections throughout the state. The convention was supposed to mark his renomination, the Chicago Tribune reported. That includes 336 of 2,500 delegates in town for the renomination of the president and vice president.

"We appreciate President Donald Trump considering our public health and safety concerns in making this incredibly hard decision", the statement said.

Quest Diagnostics Inc, one of the nation's biggest medical testing companies, said on Thursday it expects to cut week-long turnaround times for COVID-19 tests by more than half to get to "acceptable" levels by September.

"We'll have a very nice something". "We'll figure it out".

'Do I think that a stay-at-home order is medically indicated at this point? "Yet, in many states people can drink in bars, get a haircut, eat inside a restaurant, get a tattoo, get a massage, and do myriad other normal, pleasant, but non-essential activities", the letter said. And this week Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said he could "not say with confidence that this event and our community will not be at risk".

But Mr Trump has so far held only one campaign rally since the coronavirus pandemic hit the USA, and national polls are showing he is lagging behind Democrat opponent Joe Biden in popularity.
