Victoria Azarenka gets break early against Naomi Osaka

It's never been a particular career goal of Serena Williams to be alongside Molla Bjorsted Mallory in the U.S. Open record book, but after 20 years and 106 victories she is on the cusp of doing just that.

The 38-year-old "Supermum" has been open about her struggles with parenting, after nearly losing her life while giving birth to Olympia. "Whenever you can birth a baby, honestly, you can do anything", Williams said afterward. I feel like other times I've been close and I could have done better.

Two-time Grand Slam victor had never beaten Williams before in a Grand Slam.

"Hopefully it inspires women to go after their dreams", Azarenka, one of three moms to reach this year's U.S. Open quarterfinals, said after her win against Williams. The 31-year-old has kept an eye on Osaka throughout the tournament. "It's like you play a match and you go home and you're still changing diapers", Williams said.

This year's second Major has been both rare and familiar in terms of the women's singles draw. "She played unbelievable", Williams said.

The Arthur Ashe Stadium schedule opens with the women's doubles final, in which No.3 seeds Nicole Melichar and Yifan Xu take on the unseeded combination of Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva. Twice before has Azarenka made the final, losing out to Serena on both occasions. Her first-serve percentage for the tournament is 56.3, as compared to 62.8 for the rest of the field.

Serving for the match, she hit a double fault before smashing her fastest serve of the night at 109 miles per hour. But given a third chance, on her serve, Pironkova captured the first set with a backhand victor.

Williams also needed a comeback and the maximum number of sets to get through the fourth round before defeating 15th-seeded Maria Sakkari, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3. But Williams broke back, converting her first break point opportunity. "Whenever she wants to talk, she'll talk".

Brady took control in the second, breaking Osaka to take a 5-3 lead before securing the game 6-3. I'm not talking about being a better tennis player - I'm talking about being a better person for myself and my son.

After the win, Williams gave credit to Pironkova, who like her, is a working mother on the tour.

The loss left Williams just short of No. 24 yet again. Williams pumped her fist in celebration.

"Off that first step that I took, it was a long point - it wasn't my ankle, it was actually my Achilles".

At the beginning of 2018, it was reported that Azarenka had won an early round of the USA custody proceedings, with a LA judged ruling that the case should take place in Belarus, rather than Los Angeles county.
