White House chief of staff Mark Meadows tests positive to COVID-19

Since the surge in the USA began in mid-September, some states have periodically imposed piecemeal lockdown measures, including ME, which has extended its mask- wearing requirement to apply to all public spaces.

The virus has killed more than 230,000 Americans.

"What we need to do is make sure that we have the proper mitigation factors, whether it's therapies or vaccines or treatments to make sure that people don't die from this", he said.

A top aide to the chief of staff, special assistant to the president for legislative affairs Cassidy Hutchinson, was among those in the White House who tested positive, according to a White House official.

That excluded many aides who had crossed paths with Meadows at large events around Election Day, including a visit to campaign headquarters on Tuesday and a party at the White House that night.

Trump has long undermined guidance even from his own administration regarding pandemic protocols, including social distancing and mask-wearing.

Meadows' positive test comes weeks after President Trump and first lady Melania Trump contracted the novel coronavirus and recovered. During that event, Meadows worked the room extensively, without a mask, speaking to dozens. He informed a close circle of advisers after Tuesday's election, one of the people said.

A spokesman for the White House declined comment. For months, Trump was criticized for publicly downplaying the dangers of the virus.

Meadows was at Trump's bedside when the president was hospitalized last month with Covid-19. Instead, Trump began boasting that he was "immune" to the virus, after having received experimental therapeutics.

Another top campaign official, Nick Trainer, has also tested positive, a source told the Reuters news agency.
