Graham facing ethics complaint over Georgia ballots question

Friday, 20 Nov, 2020

Georgia was set Thursday to report the results of a hand tally of the 5 million votes its residents cast in the 2020 presidential election.

The governor has said little else about the GOP infighting in his own state as Trump seeks to overturn Biden's victory by challenging the results in Georgia and other battleground states.

Mr Raffensperger said Mr Graham, one of Donald Trump's vocal allies, was skeptical of the state's signature matching law and suggested that biased poll workers could count ballots with unmatched signatures.

Gabriel Sterling, who oversaw the implementation of the state's new voting system, said he expects the counties to meet that deadline. Now, this recount is part of a legally required audit, and state officials say it will instill confidence in the results.

Jones also acknowledged that, with the audit recount, 19 valid Bulloch County votes were credited to state-qualified write-in candidates. We chose the risk limiting audit of the presidential race, with a zero risk limit.

A hand recount is under way in Georgia after Mr Biden beat the outgoing president by around 14,000 votes to flip the state and win its 16 electoral college votes.

The breakdown of the uncounted ballots was 1,577 for Trump, 1,128 for Biden, 43 for Libertarian Jo Jorgensen and seven write-ins, Sterling said. Because of that small margin, Raffensperger said a full hand recount was necessary. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler wrote in a letter.

Throughout the recount, Trump has continued to tweet out falsehoods around Georgia ballots and his campaign has followed suit. But it's not going to change the ultimate result because state officials say that it's the initial results that will stand.

Before Trump won the 2016 USA election, Graham wasn't exactly all in on the Trump train.

Trump's promotion of the false claims about voting equipment on Monday prompted the publication of a letter signed by 59 computer scientists and cybersecurity researchers, who called Trump's claims "technically incoherent" and said there there is no credibility to claims the 2020 election was "rigged" by voting machines.

Civil rights leaders have criticized Mr Graham for his actions and called on Senate committees to launch an immediate investigation.

"She conned the secretary of state into a consent decree that is bad for the Georgia election system".

"They want to steal Georgia, they will do everything they can", Graham claimed on "Fox & Friends".

In June, the Wisconsin Elections Commission gave its final approval to mailing out absentee ballot application forms, but the order did not stipulate sending out ballots themselves to voters.

"We understand the eyes of the world will be on these Wisconsin counties over the next few weeks", Meagan Wolfe, Wisconsin's chief election official, said in a statement. "We've actually strengthened signature match".

In this year's general election, 2,011 ballots were rejected for missing or nonmatching signatures out of 1,322,529 ballots returned.

Trump has filed several legal challenges in the wake of the 3 November elections, citing alleged voter fraud, despite major United States media outlets announcing that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden was the victor of the 2020 presidential election. It is AP's practice not to call a race that is - or is likely to become - subject to a recount.
