Messi to miss Barcelona clash with Eibar

"First team player Lionel Messi is completing the treatment of his right ankle", the club said Sunday.

The request was rejected and instead Messi was forced to stay at Barcelona against his will, despite campaigning for the club to honour a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave.

His comments, given in an interview with Spanish TV station La Sexta, could alert Manchester City, who were heavily linked with a move for the player during his summer of uncertainty.

"I carried that into the start of the season a little bit".

"But now I feel good, excited to fight for everything in front of us".

"I'm not thinking about how the year will end".

The notion of Lionel Messi one day taking his talents to MLS has always been considered the holy grail of players that could potentially come to the league, but we've seldom heard thoughts on that idea from Messi himself.

He added: "I would like to play in the United States and experience life and the league there, but ultimately come back to Barcelona in some capacity". Not just one lawyer told me that, many did.

What did Messi say about Barcelona? "Neymar would cost a lot - how would you pay his transfer fee?" "Whoever wins will have a tough job and they'll have to do things intelligently".

"I don't know where I'll be next year", Messi said.

The Argentine was also clear about the club's deep financial problems, and when asked about a possible reunion with Neymar, he said: "To do that you need money, and there is no money. We do chat sometimes and we are in touch".

Messi's current contract with Barcelona expires at the end of the season with the club now battling financial problems and likely unable to offer him as much as other sides in Europe.

In August, Messi stunned Barcelona by telling the club he wanted to leave following a season without titles that ended in a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.
