Winter Storm Watch Issued For Tri-State Area

Saturday, 13 Feb, 2021

"This winter storm system continues to evolve but confidence is increasing just a bit that some travel impacts due to this wintry mix will develop", the weather service in Huntsville said.

Video from the scene showed dozens of smashed cars and trucks, some literally piled on top of one another on a slick roadway under cloudy skies.

The storm is forecast to produce snow in earnest around the time of the evening commute in Seattle.

The concern for potential icing extends southward into the central Alabama counties of Marion, Lamar and Winston, according to the weather service in Birmingham. Southern parts of the Portland metro area, however, would see freezing rain, where warmer air at the mid levels cause precipitation to fall in liquid form. There may be a few of you that still have icy roads to contend with, but with temperatures heading to near or above freezing this afternoon, they should look better as well. There may be some freezing rain in NW VA in the morning. Snow accumulations between 1-3 inches and ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch are possible. You may have to scrape some ice off the windshield this morning because of it. The main factor will be the influence of cold air coming from the gorge.

Another storm system may hit southern New England late Monday into Tuesday, bringing several inches of snow as well as mixed precipitation and ice to MA, though the forecast is subject to change more than 72 hours out.

"What will make this event unique is that we had freezing rain overnight south of Portland", said Neuman.

WHAT: Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Accumulations of snow, if any, are expected to be on the lighter side.

Freezing rain or sleet is most likely along the Coast Range, in the central Willamette Valley and in the southern portions of the metro area. Numbers will be pinned in the next 24 hours.

Snow and ice could crop up in parts of the midstate this weekend, but worse storms are on the horizon, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued Saturday morning by the National Weather Service.
