Ted Cruz flew to Cancun amid Texas power outages, freeze

Saturday, 20 Feb, 2021

Sen. Ted Cruz checks in for a flight at Cancun International Airport on February 18. But it appears the gesture may have come too late.

In the middle of a pandemic.

Cruz is already one of the most villainized Republicans in Congress, having created adversaries across the political spectrum in a career defined by far-right policies and fights with the establishment.

Ted Cruz didn't flee to Cancun after all, it was Agatha all along. The Bronx-born lawmaker also encouraged Texans to continue pushing for Cruz's resignation, something she'd called for back in January after Cruz egged on a violent mob of Trump supporters to storm the Capitol building by challenging the election certification process. Renewable energy proponents, including Bill Gates, are pushing back, pointing out that the state runs largely on fossil fuels and wind power accounted for less than 13 percent of the 30 to 35 gigawatts of total outages. Obviously, Cruz can not single-handedly fix the very broken Texas power grid situation (though just a few months ago, he was too busy poking fun at blackout- and wildfire-plagued California to consider what kind of shape his own state's natural disaster plan was in). "In hindsight, I wouldn't have done it".

Social media disparagement followed.

Photographs of Mr. Cruz at the airport with his wife and daughter as well as onboard an airplane went viral on Twitter Wednesday night. Meanwhile, cities including Amarillo, Austin, Corpus Christi, Houston, and San Antonio had warned those fortunate enough to have taps that they needed to boil water to safely drink it-which many couldn't do because they didn't have power for their electric stoves.

His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the BBC. Okay - now I'm really really really mad!' said one person.

In fairness to me, though, Cruz's actual defense - it was all for my kids! - was only slightly less freakish.

"With school cancelled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends", Cruz continued.

Just like, say, Lucius Malfoy, hustling Draco to safety.

Earlier, Cruz's office had declined to answer specific questions about the family vacation, but his staff reached out to the Houston Police Department on Wednesday afternoon to say the senator would be arriving at the airport, according to department spokeswoman Jodi Silva.

Cruz later admitted to Hannity that he meant to stay at the beach resort "through the weekend", working to help his freezing people from Cancun. "You took it seriously, and you worked hand in hand with the governor in the lead-up to this, knowing this was all a big possibility", he added.

He changed his flight, he said, on realizing it wasn't a good look. Do his kids not need to be kept safe and hugged?

Seth Rogen did not mince his words when expressing his thoughts on Ted Cruz's response to the crisis Texas is now enduring, calling the senator two different types of "motherf*****".

Hillary Clinton has blasted Senator Ted Cruz and his family for leaving behind their poodle Snowflake as they jetted off to the Ritz-Carlson hotel in Cancun, Mexico.
