Women turn their backs on Scott Morrison

Tuesday, 30 Mar, 2021

Right, there's a lot to unpack here.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, said, "Changes, I'm announcing today will once again provide the strongest ever female representation in an Australian government cabinet".

Christian Porter will be replaced as attorney general and minister for industrial relations by Michaelia Cash, who was promoted from the role of minister for employment, skills and small business.

The current Industry Minister, Karen Andrews, will take on Dutton's role as Minister of Home Affairs, taking a new position as one of the cabinet's most senior women.

"It's shameful that it hasn't been dealt with until now, that it's only being dealt with now because the government's got a political problem that it needs to fix", she said.

"What we must do is address the government's agenda with the changes we are making".

He will now have a record seven female lawmakers in his Cabinet.

But he raised eyebrows on Monday when he suggested Ms Payne, who will co-chair a task-force on women's equality, would "effectively amongst her female colleagues (be) the prime Minister for Women".

Queensland Senator Amanda Stoker has also been handed the role of Assistant Minister for Women, working alongside Senator Payne.

"This fully addresses all the issues relate to the advice received from the solicitor-general, as well as the Prime Minister and Cabinet regarding the ministerial guidelines", he said.

After weeks of shocking revelations about workplace culture and the treatment of women in federal politics, the Prime Minister has been forced to rearrange his front bench.

Porter's permanence has been heavily criticized following complaints that he was raped for more than 30 years by a woman who died as a teenager, which he denies, and was filed by police this month for lack of evidence.

Yeah, you read that right.

The second, the "lens" on which Morrison is now primarily focused, is all about trying to manage the deep problem he and his government are facing with women's anger and issues. It has some positives...but it can be a very unsafe tool in disrespectful hands.

"It may be a really harmful instrument in disrespectful arms, and we have seen that with the trolling and abuse and harassment notably of ladies", he mentioned.

Porter goes from the nation's first law officer to minister for industry, science and technology.

Tasmanian Liberal Party member Sue Hickey also accused Liberal Senator Eric Abetz of "slut-shaming" Ms Higgins and dismissing Mr Porter's rape allegations.

Senator Payne will also raise the issue during a meeting of state and territory women's safety ministers next week. Why hasn't Porter been dropped from cabinet completely?

He has been under pressure to resign after he revealed himself as the Minister at the centre of the rape allegation.

After being the primary Minister for Dwelling Affairs, Peter Dutton has been shifted to Defence and develop into the federal government's chief within the Home of Representatives.
