Area towns set Memorial Day weekend services

The Annual Memorial Day Chicken BBQ after the parade. Various events have been planned throughout the region for local residents and visitors to enjoy.

Here is a guide to events happening in Clare, Gratiot and Isabella counties.

Each year, around Memorial Day, dozens of white crosses and a Jewish star are placed in front of the Leominster Veterans' Memorial Center on West Street.

Anyone wishing to be part of the parade should be in line on Dochter Street before 10:45 a.m. Following the ceremony, there will be a procession to the Canfield East Cemetery where a second brief ceremony will honor deceased Canfield veterans.

- The Lafayette Amvets Post 33 will meet on Monday at 9:30 a.m.at St. Mary's Church on the corners of Pacific and Bramhall avenues. St. Augustine's Cemetery, Hecker.

On Sunday in the park, soloist Kimberly Vance will sing the national anthem and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lock Haven will present a solemn ceremony.

The program at the chapel includes speaker Lt. Benjamin G. Smith. James Garfield delivered an address.

Coakley said anyone desiring to participate in the parade must be registered to lessen the confusion in planning the marching order.

The city's Memorial Day observance will begin at 9 a.m.at Bellevue Cemetery, 100 Reservoir St. Veterans Services Officer Jaime Melendez will provide opening remarks, boatswain's mate Donald Silva will be the keynote speaker, and Mayor Daniel Rivera will join him in laying the ceremonial wreath.

2 p.m., Gettysburg Memorial Day Parade will begin at Lefever Street in Gettysburg and head northeast to Middle Street; turn west on East Middle, and south on Baltimore to the Soldiers' National Cemetery, with a ceremony at 3 p.m.at the Rostrum in the Soldiers' National Cemetery.

Members of American Legion Post 210 will have a rifle salute and place flags at 9 a.m. Monday at Spring Hill.

The 10 a.m. ceremony is normally held at the Evergreen Cemetery, but also needed to move inside because of expected bad weather.

10 a.m., parade from Willett Elementary School, through downtown Attleboro, to Capron Park. The ceremony to retire worn, faded and tattered flags follows. Light refreshments and cookies will be served following the program until 11:30 a.m. while the church remains open for fellowship.

The Klemme Memorial Day service will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 28 at the United Church of Christ.

Both events begin at 11 a.m.

"This Memorial Day, on which we decorate their graves with the tokens of love and affection, is no idle ceremony with us, to pass away an hour; but it brings back to our minds in all their vividness the fearful conflicts of that bad war in which they fell as victims".

A Memorial Day service will be held Monday, May 28, at 11 a.m.at the All Veterans Monument at Osceola Mills. The holiday is celebrated with parades and services in remembrance of the military men and women who died serving the country.

Monday, May 28 marks the 13th annual Memorial Day 5K for Challenge Hearts & Minds.

Blairstown Historic Preservation Committee will host a Veterans Tour and Tribute at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at Cedar Ridge Cemetery. The flag retirement ceremony will be taking place in the Veteran's Memorial Garden near the Old St. Louis Road entrance and reflection pond. May 28 at the gazebo on the Canfield Village Green. (Drivers willing to help transport people during the parade should be lined up in that parking lot at 9:30 a.m.).
