The confused Mandalorian is reminded by bounty droid IG-11 (Taika Waititi) that other species can age at different rates. His race, the Mandalorians, were further explored in the animated series The Clone Wars and later again in Rebels, centered around Sabine Wren, the young artist and warrior. Let's dive into why the entrance of this kid is so huge. Unless the guy enacted some kind of insane regeneration ploy audiences were unaware of, this bundle of fan service is unlikely to actually be, you know, Yoda.
"The Mandalorian" bears the burden of heightened expectations and salivating anticipation from the millions of diehard fans who have made the "Star Wars" franchise so inescapable over the years. We never even see him reveal himself for himself. But just about everything about Yoda and this creature's species, including the name of the species, is shrouded in mystery-possibly, until now. He may have no living family - at least, that's what the episode's lone flashback teased. Let us know in the comments. And then the Mandalorian reaches out to touch the baby's finger. But that's pretty much where the similarities end.
The discovery of "baby Yoda" also suggests we may finally learn more about the green, long-eared species. And does that also mean the Mandalorian is reborn?
No one valued bounty hunters quite like The Empire. But what about cloning somebody as powerful with the Force as Emperor Palpatine? The music, from Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, is also a ideal blend of John Williams' Star Wars score and spaghetti western twang with the occasional digital beat rising up from beneath it all, the only thing keeping it from being a full-on update of Ennio Morricone being the clinking of spurs.
The Mandalorian could grow attached to young Yoda. And what darkness still lurks in the more volatile corners of this world? The Mandalorian is set to answer some of those big questions-and even more we hadn't thought to ask. This may be a story of a former bounty hunter - and not an episodic look at bounty hunting. "I read. I see two, three, maybe four films per year", he said. Where did he obtain that metal, and if he got it from the Client, did he hand over Baby Yoda to him? Did Yoda have a baby?
The show, which takes place five years after the events of The Return of the Jedi, has plenty to pleasepeople who love the movies, who will likely spend plenty of time discussing how the story and characters fit into the larger Star Wars universe.
Meanwhile, Abrams has teased that The Rise of Skywalker will be more "daring" than The Force Awakens - which he directed - because of Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi. I just wish more work was done on the writing, and perhaps a better decision about the Mandalorian's helmet could have been taken to make the character more interesting. Because the child of Yoda's species has the potential to live as long as Yoda, it could have a few roles to play in the upcoming pieces of Star Wars cannon.
As for "The Mandalorian", there's not a lot to say yet except to report the good news that it is very much in keeping with a Star War - visually intriguing, amusingly adventurous and light on its feet, a space-western comfortable with the tropes of cinema culture and common reference points.
