Iran confirms prisoner swap with US

US Ambassador to Switzerland Edward McMullen greets Xiyue Wang in Zurich, Switzerland December 7, 2019. Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif and USA official Brian Hook coordinated the swap of prisoners Massoud Soleimani and Xiyue Wang.

The swap, however, had clear limits.

"Mr. Wang had been held under the pretense of espionage since August 2016", Trump said.

He said the United States and Israel will remain "without hope" despite their goal of weakening Iran through sanctions. In Saturday morning tweet, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that "another American is coming home".

Switzerland represents U.S. interests in Iran. "And we're having a be taught about at altering the criteria very rapidly".

Princeton University, academics from around the country and the State Department insisted Wang's conviction was unjust.

"Actually I think it was a great thing for Iran". "So we're going to be opening up that, I believe". It might have been a precursor as to what can be done. He later posed for a photograph with Wang, who carried a folded American flag in his arms while wearing gray workout clothes. He is expected to remain in Germany for several days before returning to the United States.

Hua Qu, Mr Wang's wife, wrote in statement: "Our family is complete once again. See, we can make a deal together!"

"#POTUS and his royal flush... next he'll be telling us that toilets flush #ANTIclockwise for Democrats and #CLOCKWISE FOR REPUBLICANS..."

"We know that under the situation of sanctions and pressure, people are in hardship". "They are afraid of our knowledge".

He was a student of late-19th- and early-20th-century history of Eurasia, and was in Iran "solely for the objective of studying Farsi and doing scholarly research in connection with his Ph.D. dissertation", according to the Princeton University website.

Soleimani works in stem cell research, hematology and regenerative medicine.

At least five other Americans are known to be imprisoned or missing in Iran.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, Zarif said he is "very happy that on National Students' Day, one of the greatest professors and scientists of our country is returned home".

Rouhani spoke weeks after a new oilfield with an estimated 50 billion barrels of crude oil was discovered in the southern part of the Islamic Republic. U.S. law enforcement arrested the Iranian stem cell scientist in fall 2018 upon his landing in Chicago, according to Iran's state-run Press TV. Iran has accused the USA without evidence of being behind the mid-November protests over gasoline prices.

Trump even made remarks on senior officials and the entrepreneurs who were invited to the gathering and majorly discussed the plumbing issues. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ruled out direct talks between the nations. "It shows that American officials have issues with Iranians".

"Mr. Wang is focused on making sure that he's in good health and being reunited with his family". At that time, BBC Persian allegedly had an US source stating that the story could not be confirmed. In the time since, the US has imposed harsh sanctions on Iran's economy.

Iran's state-run IRNA news agency later reported that Soleimani was with Iranian officials in Switzerland. He was sent to Iran's notorious Evin Prison and sentenced to 10 years.

Inflation in Iran is said to be around 40 percent. Prior to the prisoner swap, Soleimani was facing a federal trial in Georgia, according to Bloomberg.

He called on Iranians to build up the country's scientific front to further make the enemy disappointed.

"The United States will not rest until we bring every American detained in Iran and around the world back home to their loved ones", he said in a statement.

"Iranian authorities continue to play a cruel game with our father's life, and with our family".
