N. Korea conducts 'important test' at once-dismantled site

The test took place Saturday at the long-range rocket launching station in Tongchang-ri, a part of North Pyongan province near the border of China, the government-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

"The result will play a significant role in once again altering the strategic position of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the near future", the Academy of National Defense Science said in a statement, referring to North Korea by its official name.

Earlier this month, Trump hinted at using his country's military might against North Korea if necessary, rekindling tensions between the two nations.

"The North Koreans have always preferred a step by step approach rather than negotiating everything all at once", Town said. Last March, South Korea's spy agency and some USA experts said that North Korea was restoring the facilities, raising doubts about whether it was committed to denuclearization.

The test is the latest in a string of statements and actions from North Korea created to underscore the seriousness of its deadline.

A senior United States administration official earlier said Washington had seen reports of a test and was "coordinating closely with allies and partners".

Pyongyang has set Washington a December 31 deadline to make new concessions to kickstart stalled talks. North Korea had another successful satellite launch in 2016.

Rocket engines are easily repurposed for use in missiles and the global community has called Pyongyang's space programme a fig leaf for weapons tests.

"I don't think a deal will be made in the near term", said Yun Sun, with the Stimson Center think tank in Washington.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visits a multiple rocket launcher site at an undisclosed location.

Diplomats from Pyongyang and Washington have been attempting to negotiate a trade that would see Kim give up the country's nuclear weapons and the ballistic missiles used to deliver them in exchange for relief from punishing USA and United Nations sanctions that have crippled the North Korean economy.

Kim has announced a self-imposed moratorium on nuclear warhead and long-range missile tests ahead of seeking dialogue with the United States, which Trump has held up as his diplomatic achievement.

"(Kim) knows I have an election coming up.

Pyeongyang has warned that it will walk a "new path" if those negotiations don't bear fruit by year's end.

Trump was speaking to reporters at the White House before leaving for Florida. The statement was a response to Wednesday's condemnation by six European countries of North Korea's 13 ballistic missile launches since May.

-North Korea summit in June 2018 in Singapore, U.S. President Donald Trump promised to provide security guarantees to Pyongyang in return for "complete" denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The North did not say what was tested in Saturday's testing.

"We regard their behavior as nothing more than a despicable act of intentionally flattering the United States", Mr. Song said.

Last week, Trump warned the USA would use military force against the North if necessary, prompting an angry reaction from the communist state.
