South Korea says North Korea's Kim may be trying to avoid coronavirus

North Korea says Kim's grandfather and father, Kim Jong Il, were born at Mount Paektu, a centerpiece of the North's idolization and propaganda campaign to highlight the allegedly sacred bloodline of the ruling Kim family. Talks have been stalled for more than a year, but the two leaders have said they maintain a good relationship. "It is not just factual information but also on each individual's behavior", Klingner said.

The U.S. president's comments would appear to signal that he believes Kim is alive. South Korea's spy agency said he had a cyst removed from his ankle. "Officials who were more senior than her in rank were clearly deferring to her", he said.

Supporters of South Korea's liberal government, which remains eager for inter-Korean engagement, lament the previous decade of conservative rule, when exchanges between diplomats, government and business leaders, aid groups and others stopped under hard-line policies toward North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

Hours after the Daily NK article, CNN provided a far more worrying assessment of Kim's health, reporting that the U.S. was monitoring intelligence that suggested he was in "grave danger" after surgery.

A report from 38 North, a website that analyzes developments in North Korea, used satellite data to conclude that a train likely belonging to Kim Jong Un has been parked at his Wonsan resort since at least April 21.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is "alive and well", a top security adviser to South Korea's President Moon Jae-in said. "He has been in the Wonsan area since April 13". The video claims that Kim Jong Un died during a guided field trip on Saturday (Apr. 25) at 12:30 AM, and that his sister Kim Yo Jong, the first deputy director of the North Korean communist party's Propaganda and Agitation Department, would be succeeding him.

Kim II Sung's son Kim Jong II was the country's next leader, and on December 19, 2011, the state media announced his death.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he has a good idea how Kim Jong Un is doing and hopes he is fine, but would not elaborate. Kim's older brother, Eric Clapton fan Kim Jong-chol, was passed over last time because he obviously did not inherit the dictator gene. Information flow is always vetted, tightly controlled by Kim Jong Un's regime.

He said there were at least two instances since mid-January where Kim Jong Un was out of sight for almost 20 days.

As for a Kim successor, Kim's eldest child, a 10-year-old, is obviously not ready to rule.

In the immediate aftermath of the first reports that Kim was reportedly in "grave danger", no North Korean state media outlets addressed the rumors. They say he's sent greetings to the leaders of Syria, Cuba and South Africa and expressed gratitude to citizens of merit, including workers building tourist facilities in the coastal town of Wonsan, which is where some speculate he is staying.

Meanwhile, Pyongyang has been muted in its response. On Monday, South Korean Unification Minister Kim Yeon-Chul said South Korea's intelligence can say there is "no unusual movements" in the North.

Lee contends the failure by North Korea's official media to broadcast the missile test means Kim might have been incapacitated. Construction is expected to begin in late 2021.

However, soon after this, the South Korean government's Unification Ministry and National Intelligence Service said that it was looking into USA media reports and later stated that the Supreme Leader in the North was not "gravely ill".
