McCann disappeared from her bedroom on May 3, 2007 during a family vacation in the Algarve while her parents were dining with friends nearby in the resort of Praia da Luz.

He is now in jail for an unrelated sexual attack on the elderly woman, which took place two years before the disappearance of McCann. They did not name him.

We in Northern Ireland have had many cases of people who disappeared without trace, including Lisa Dorrian, Arlene Arkinson, Capt Robert Nairac and Columba McVeigh, and in every case their families have continued to live with the misery of not knowing exactly what happened to them or where their bodies are.

-German media revealed that the pedophile has a long record of child sex abuse, including a sex attack on a girl, 9, and exposing himself to a six-year-old.

At a press conference in Braunschweig, Germany, a spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office confirmed jailed rapist Christian B, 43, is being probed for murder.

Christian B. told an acquaintance he wanted to "capture something small and use it for days on end", the report said.

The development, though grim, raised hopes that the mystery surrounding the case might finally be resolved.

British police still list the case as a "missing persons" investigation, and Kate and Gerry McCann say they have never given up hope.

Scotland Yard said that significant information regarding the man had emerged after investigators made an appeal in May 2017, the 10th anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance. "They've never given up hope that she's alive, but they want to find peace".

Wolters wouldn't give any other details of the suspect's identity so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

The BBC reported that the suspect was living regularly in the Algarve region of Portugal, where McCann went missing, between 1995 and 2007 and regularly committed burglaries and dealt drugs.

On Wednesday, German prosecutors announced that they were investigating a 43-year-old German man in connection with the 2007 disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann.

He was recently convicted of sexually assaulting an American tourist in Portugal in 2005, and is in the process of appealing this conviction.

Wolters also explained that if the investigation were to lead to charges and to a trial, the suspect would be tried in Germany, as murder is a criminal offense in Germany, as it is in Portugal, independent of where the crime was carried out.

Christian B held a series of jobs, including at a restaurant, but authorities said there was evidence to suggest he also earned money by drug trafficking and burgling hotels and holiday flats.

The renewed appeal for information includes photographs of two vehicles the suspect was known to be driving at the time Madeleine disappeared- a Jaguar and a Volkswagon- as well as the suspect's phone number and a Portuguese phone number which called him shortly before the girl vanished. "It was used in and around the area of Praia da Luz".

As he was talking with a friend a report about the 3-year-old's disappearance came on TV and he said he knew what had happened to the child.
