India now fifth most-affected country by coronavirus, surpasses Spain

The Health Ministry on Saturday said that the recovery rate from Covid-19 in the country stood at 48.20 per cent, from a total of 2,36,657 confirmed cases.Notably, India has now overtaken Italy, which has recorded 2,34,531 cases in total.

According to the Union Health Ministry, the number of cases in India as of 9 am on June 7 stands at 2,46,628, with 9,971 cases in 24 hours.

The new cases had returned from overseas - five from the United Arab Emirates, two from Kuwait and one from India - and were in quarantine, where most of Thailand's recent cases have been detected, said Panprapa Yongtrakul, an assistant spokeswoman for the government's Covid-19 Administration Centre.

An analysis of the numbers announced by various states and UTs showed that the total number of confirmed cases across the four main metropolitan regions of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai has risen to close to 1.14 lakh - accounting for almost 48% of the nationwide tally.

The state now has 42,609 active cases, it said, adding that a total of 5,37,124 samples have been tested so far.

The Health Ministry reported 9,887 new cases on Saturday, bringing the total to 236,657.

Cases across the world are now at 68,96,179 with 3,99,785 deaths (according to the map by Johns Hopkins) as on June 7. "We have to make sure that the size of the pandemic remains below our capacity to treat patients", VK Paul, chairman of the national task force against COVID-19, told RFI. On Friday, number of people infected rose to 2.35 lakh in India which made the country reach the sixth spot globally overtaking Italy. Cases in several metropolitan states like Delhi and Mumbai have doubled since May 1, when government eased restrictions and allowed migrant movements in special trains.

The states and union territories with four-digit or bigger tallies now include Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Punjab, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

Whereas Delhi's cases have surged to 27,654 with its death toll mounting to 761 and 10,664 recoveries till Sunday morning.

They say the death occurred on June 1. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami said that around 86 percent of the state's coronavirus cases were asymptomatic.

However, India's toll of deaths from COVID-19, the illness triggered by the infection, is 6,642, little compared to those other nations. MMR has reported 1,993 fatalities, including 1,577 from Mumbai alone, the statement said. The rest, 10,664 (39%), have recovered from the disease.

The group said in a statement: "The G20, with invited countries, has coordinated the global efforts to support the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic".
