Pac-12 Returns: What You Need To Know

Tuesday, 29 Sep, 2020

The conference announced Thursday it will start a seven-game schedule on November 6th, with the conference title game being held December 18th.

Starting on November 6, the Pac-12 will begin its seven-game schedule, after the conference's CEO group of university presidents voted unanimously to resume football and basketball, ending a January 1 halt on athletic events for Pac-12 schools.

Also unclear is how the conference will proceed if one or more teams can not practice or play due to local restrictions or a COVID-19 outbreak. Utah athletic director Mark Harlan said other fall sports - such as soccer, volleyball and cross country - will continue to prepare for spring seasons.

The Pac-12 will try squeeze seven games into seven weeks, borrowing an idea from the Big Ten and allowing all its teams to play an extra cross-division game on championship weekend.

"Our goal first and foremost is to get back on the field", Wilcox said in a Cal Athletics press conference.

The Mountain West reports it plans to play an eight-game football season starting on October 24.

For universities utilizing daily antigen testing, at least one weekly PCR test will also be administered for each student-athlete, in addition to all positive tests to be confirmed with a PCR test.

A fan sitting alone in Sun Devil Stadium is symbolic of the wait to start the Pac-12 football season.

Scott on the importance of the partnership with Quidel Corporation to restart the season: "That was obviously a game-changer for us in terms of having access to the testing because our medical advisory committee was recommending daily testing in certain markets ..."

The Pac-12 had already started planning for the financial consequences of not playing football this autumn, with Mercury News reporting back in August that the conference had developed a US$996 million loan scheme to support its members in the event that the season was cancelled.

Following in line with several other Power 5 conferences, the Mountain West announced it will have a fall football season. The Big Ten reversed course last week, and the Pac-12 announced its plans just hours before the Mountain West did on Thursday.

This every-conference-for-itself college football season looks like it will have five different start dates.

So did the ability of all of the teams in the conference to be able to meet and practice.

That aggressive timeline to begin is subject to state and local health authorities allowing teams to play during the pandemic, which is no guarantee.

"We will work with our public health officials to comply with the new public health order and be part of the community solution in controlling the spiking cases so we can resume team activities as soon as possible", Colorado athletic director Rick George said during a video conference call Thursday night.

"As we watched the NFL kick off over the weekend and our fellow college football players compete in the last few weeks, it left us wondering why we can not join them", USC players wrote to Gov. Newsom.
