Home Minister Amit Shah has said that it is a momentous achievement for India as DGGI has granted approval to COVID vaccines of Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech.

A government minister said earlier the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine had been given the green light on Friday, paving the way for a huge immunisation campaign in the world's second most populous country.

Dr Guleria further addressed apprehensions about the safety of the vaccine considering that it was tested and introduced in a short span of time, saying, "Safety is the most important factor and all standard precautions have been followed in the past for the approval of the vaccine", adding that the vaccine in India would be as effective as those developed by other countries. It is also not clear under which provisions of the extant law the SEC has recommended for grant of REU approval and in "clinical trial mode" at that, AIDAN said.

"Bharat Biotech has developed a Whole Virion Inactivated Corona Virus Vaccine (Covaxin) in collaboration with ICMR and NIV (Pune), from where they received the virus seed strains". Although Pfizer's shot was the first to be rolled out following the publication of full Phase III trial data, Russian Federation and China have been inoculating their citizens for months with several different vaccines still undergoing late-stage trials.

"The publication of phase II trial data is undergoing the peer review process".

Co-Win or COVID-19 Vaccine Intelligence Network is an upgraded version of the eVIN (Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network) which will be used by the Health Ministry during the vaccination drive in India. The approval, he said, "accelerates the road to a healthier and COVID-free nation".

In a series of tweets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the development marked a "decisive turning point to strengthen a spirited fight".

Bharat Biotech on Saturday announced successful recruitment of 23,000 volunteers, and continued progress towards achieving the goal of 26,000 participants for phase-III clinical trial of its coronavirus vaccine "Covaxin" across multiple sites in India.

Footballers were also among those caught breaking the rules, with Tottenham's Erik Lamela, Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso to be disciplined after a picture emerged of them attending a large party.

Britain and Argentina this week authorised the AstraZeneca vaccine while the World Health Organization on Thursday granted emergency validation to the rival Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. It has developed vaccines for influenza H1N1, Rotavirus, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Chikungunya, Zika and the world's first tetanus-toxoid conjugated vaccine for Typhoid.
